What is Major Luck Cycles (Da Yun)?

In BaZi, the Major Luck Cycles (Da Yun) are ten-year stages of fortune derived from your birth Month Pillar, representing the energetic themes and overall atmosphere you meet at different phases of life.

Also known as: Major Luck Cycles · Luck Pillars · Decade Luck · Da Yun · forward and reverse sequencing · starting luck (Qi Yun)

What are the Major Luck Cycles?

The Major Luck Cycles are an important timeline in BaZi. They divide life into segments, each lasting ten years, describing the overall atmosphere and energetic theme you encounter during that decade. Put simply, your original BaZi chart (the four pillars of year, month, day and hour) is like the "innate foundation" you were born with, while the Major Luck Cycles are the "outer environment" that this foundation passes through as the years go by. The same BaZi chart, paired with different luck cycles, can bring a very different rhythm and set of circumstances.

Where do the Major Luck Cycles come from? Forward and reverse sequencing

The Major Luck Cycles are derived from the Month Pillar. Starting from the Month Pillar, a series of luck pillars is worked out step by step, moving forward or backward through the sequence of Stems and Branches. Whether the movement is forward or backward depends on gender and the yin-yang of the birth year:

  • Forward sequencing: for example, men born in a yang year and women born in a yin year have cycles that run forward through the Stems and Branches.
  • Reverse sequencing: for example, men born in a yin year and women born in a yang year have cycles that run backward through the Stems and Branches.

This is what is often called "forward and reverse" sequencing of the luck cycles. The age at which a person enters their first Major Luck Cycle after birth is called the starting luck age, which is why the age of changing cycles differs from person to person. The actual method follows fixed rules; for now it is enough to grasp the concept without rushing to memorise the formulas.

How are the Major Luck Cycles different from the Annual Pillar?

Many people confuse the Major Luck Cycles with the Annual Pillar (the fleeting year). The difference lies in their length of time:

  • Major Luck Cycle: one segment every ten years, like the "backdrop" or main melody of a life stage.
  • Annual Pillar: one for each year, like that year's "weather" — more immediate and closer to daily life.

When reading fortune, one usually looks first at the Major Luck Cycle to set the tone for the decade, then uses the Annual Pillar to read the specific changes of each year. The two are read together so that the full picture emerges.

How do I know which cycle I am in now?

To know "which cycle you are in now," first work out which Major Luck Cycle range you currently fall into (that is, your present age and which decade it belongs to), then look at the Stems and Branches of that luck pillar and how they interact with your natal BaZi. Each stage has its own energetic theme: some stages suit pushing forward and learning, some suit steady accumulation, and some suit settling down and adjusting direction. The point of understanding the Major Luck Cycles is not to label each period as good or bad, but to arrange your priorities in tune with the character of the current stage, so that your efforts land in the right rhythm.

Frequently asked questions

Q: How often do the Major Luck Cycles change?

Each Major Luck Cycle lasts ten years, changing to a new pillar every decade. The age at which a person enters their first cycle (the starting luck age) differs from person to person, so the timing of each change of cycle also varies.

Q: How is forward versus reverse sequencing decided?

It is decided by gender and the yin-yang of the birth year. Generally, men born in a yang year and women born in a yin year are sequenced forward, while men born in a yin year and women born in a yang year are sequenced in reverse. This is the origin of "forward and reverse" luck sequencing.

Q: How do you read the Major Luck Cycle and the Annual Pillar together?

The Major Luck Cycle is the ten-year backdrop that sets the tone; the Annual Pillar is the immediate change of each year. Usually you look at the luck cycle first to establish the theme of the stage, then use the Annual Pillar to observe the details of that year, reading the two together for a complete picture.
