Crystal Guide
List of Crystals and Their Meanings (A–Z)
An honest, plain-English guide to 22 natural crystals — their folklore and symbolism, which hand tradition says to wear them on, and how to care for each stone.
Crystals, in the everyday sense, are natural minerals and stones worn or kept for their beauty and the meanings folklore has given them. Below is the list of the 22 stones we work with, first grouped by mineral type, then A–Z with what each one traditionally symbolises.
Types of crystals by mineral family
| Type | Crystals | What defines it |
|---|---|---|
| Quartz family | Clear Quartz, Amethyst, Citrine, Rose Quartz, Strawberry Quartz, Gold Rutilated Quartz, Rutilated Quartz, Green Phantom Quartz, Blue Phantom Quartz, Super Seven, Tiger's Eye, Pietersite | Silicon dioxide, hardness about 7 — colour comes from trace elements or mineral inclusions. |
| Chalcedony (agate) | Red Agate | Micro-crystalline quartz, often banded; frequently heat-treated for colour. |
| Feldspar | Moonstone, Amazonite | Known for light effects such as the blue sheen of moonstone. |
| Beryl | Aquamarine, Morganite | The same mineral family as emerald, hardness 7.5–8. |
| Tourmaline | Tourmaline | Comes in almost every colour; black tourmaline is the most common. |
| Volcanic glass | Obsidian, Silver Obsidian | Natural glass formed when lava cools quickly — not a crystal in the strict mineral sense. |
| Aventurine / man-made | Money Stone, Terahertz | Money stone may be natural aventurine or copper-glass goldstone; terahertz is a man-made silicon material. |
