Vedic Astrology Chart: Moon Sign, Nakshatra and Dasha
Vedic astrology (Jyotish) is the Indian astrological tradition that uses the sidereal zodiac and centres on the Moon: your Moon sign and its nakshatra (one of 27 lunar mansions) describe temperament, and the Vimshottari dasha divides life into periods ruled in turn by nine planets.
The Qi Yi Crystal reading room converts tropical positions to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, then calculates your Moon sign, nakshatra and current dasha, followed by a plain-English AI reading.

How a Vedic chart is calculated: 4 steps
- 1
Switch to the sidereal zodiac: planetary positions are calculated, then the Lahiri ayanamsa (about 24°) is subtracted — which is why your Vedic sign is often the sign before your Western one.
- 2
Find your Moon sign and nakshatra: the Moon's sign is central in Jyotish, and the zodiac is further divided into 27 nakshatras of four padas each.
- 3
Lay out the Vimshottari dasha: from where the Moon sat in its nakshatra at birth, the 120-year cycle of nine periods is set (Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17 years).
- 4
Read it in plain English: the AI explains your Moon sign and nakshatra, the themes of your current major and sub-period, when the next major period starts, and three things you can do.
Vedic vs Western astrology
| Vedic (Jyotish) | Western | |
|---|---|---|
| Zodiac | Sidereal (aligned to the actual constellations) | Tropical (starts at the spring equinox) |
| Main focus | Moon sign and the 27 nakshatras | Sun sign |
| Timing | Vimshottari dasha (nine planetary periods) | Transits and progressions |
| Your sign | Often the sign before your Western one (e.g. Western Taurus, Vedic Aries) | The sign most people know |
Is it accurate? Our honest take
Moon sign, nakshatra and dasha are calculated by code from planetary positions and fixed rules (ayanamsa by linear approximation, Rahu and Ketu as mean nodes). What the periods mean comes from the classical texts of Jyotish; treat it as reference, not scientific fact.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my Vedic sign different from my Western sign?
The two systems use different zodiacs. Western astrology starts from the spring equinox (tropical); Jyotish follows the actual constellations (sidereal). The gap is now about 24°, so many people's Vedic sign is the one before their Western sign.
Can I get a Vedic chart without my birth time?
Yes. Without a time we calculate for noon; the Moon sign is usually still right, but the nakshatra and dasha start dates may shift. The Ascendant needs both birth hour and minute.
What is a dasha?
The Vimshottari dasha divides a 120-year span into nine periods, each ruled by a planet and split into sub-periods. Knowing which period you are in helps make sense of the themes of the last few years.
How much is a Vedic astrology reading?
A Vedic chart reading in our reading room is 99 points (1 point = NT$1).
Is a human reading my chart?
No. Charts and calculations are done by code following fixed rules, and the reading is written by AI. There is no human reader. How each reading is calculated is published on our “How our readings work” page.
