How to Buy a Real Crystal Bracelet Online: Natural vs Glass, Dyed and Coated Beads

What "real" should mean on a listing

"Real", "genuine" and "natural" are used loosely online, so it helps to separate four questions. A trustworthy seller answers all of them without being asked.

• Is it stone at all? Glass and resin imitations are common at the cheapest end. Names such as cherry quartz and opalite describe man-made glass, not quartz or opal.
• Is it the stone it is named as? Dyed pale stones are sometimes sold under the name of a rarer, more expensive one.
• Has it been treated? Dyeing, surface coating (often sold as "aura" finishes) and reconstituting crushed material with resin are all treatments. None is a crime, but each should be disclosed and priced accordingly.
• Is it natural or lab-grown? Synthetic quartz is chemically quartz but grown in a factory. It is flawless and inexpensive, and should never be priced as natural.

Checks you can make from photos and in the hand

No single home test is conclusive, and the often-repeated scratch and flame tests mostly damage jewellery. These observations are safer and, taken together, tell you a good deal.

• Uniformity: a whole strand of beads that are identical in colour and perfectly clear, at a low price, points to glass or synthetic material. Natural beads differ slightly from one another.
• Inclusions: ice cracks, cloud-like veils, mineral needles and phantoms are what natural quartz looks like inside. Round air bubbles are what glass looks like inside.
• Colour pooling: on dyed beads, colour gathers in cracks and around the drill hole, and looks stronger there than in the body of the stone.
• Temperature and weight: stone feels cool when first picked up and warms slowly; glass and resin warm quickly, and resin feels noticeably light.
• Photos: ask whether the pictures show the actual piece or a catalogue sample. With natural stone, the next strand will never look exactly the same.

What an honest seller shows before you pay

Beyond the stone itself, the listing tells you how the seller works. These are the things we publish, and the things we suggest you look for anywhere.

• The stone name for every bead — ours lists stone type and size for each one — and, from any seller, a plain answer on dyeing and synthetics.
• Bead diameter in millimetres. Ours are 6mm, 8mm and 10mm.
• Pricing you can follow. In our builder each bead's unit price is shown, and swapping one bead recalculates the total instantly.
• Sizing by your wrist, not "one size". Ours runs from 11cm to 22cm in 0.5 cm steps.

• No promised outcomes. Meanings attached to crystals are folk culture and symbolism, with no scientifically proven effect, and a seller who promises results is telling you something about how they sell.

Getting the size right the first time

Wrap a soft measuring tape once around your wrist where the bracelet will sit and read the actual circumference. Choose that exact number on the site; sizes run from 11cm to 22cm, which is about 4.3 to 8.7 inches. If your tape is in inches, multiply by 2.54 — a 6.5 inch wrist is about 16.5cm.

Please do not add extra length for comfort. The system already calculates the strung length and slack from the bead diameter you chose, and adding your own allowance on top is the most common reason a bracelet arrives too loose. Larger beads sit further from the skin, which is why the calculation depends on bead size and why we ask for the wrist itself rather than a finished length.
